Ozarks Backroad Adventure Track
The Ozarks region is perhaps the most underrated adventure destination in the United States. We’ve all heard of the Ozarks, but most people don’t realize the magnitude of the mountains once you reach southwestern Missouri and Northwestern Arkansas. They’re real mountains! But unlike the Smoky Mountains, these hills are untamed. There is a strong backroading community here, and enough challenging roads and trails and trails to keep you busy for days.
On this route, you’ll start in the heart of the Ozarks at one of the coolest little general stores in the country. Right off the ‘BAT’ you’ll be riding through creek crossings, climbing mountains, and exploring seldom-seen areas of the Ozarks. Fuel up any time you can – the Ozarks can be fairly desolate. You’ll ride to and stay at the quirky town of Eureka Springs, and once up in Missouri you’ll see some of the largest natural springs in the U.S. Fire towers, single lane bridges, old mills – there’s plenty to keep this adventure interesting!
The OZ BAT is 85% gravel. Sometimes it’s almost harder to find pavement in the Ozarks than it is finding gravel roads. You’ll see a lot of playgrounds for Off-Roaders and Side-X-Sides – go have some fun yourself! By the end of the route, you’ll probably be tired of creek crossings and river crossings, with almost 100 marked on the track. And you read that right – River Crossings. Here’s your chance to play Oregon Trail in real life, and ford that river! Be cautious though – some of the crossings are VERY Deep!
We hope you enjoy the OZ BAT and all the Ozarks have to offer! Go ride the route, and give us your feedback!

The Ozarks BAT starts at the Oark General Store in Oark, Arkansas. They have rental cabins and camping spots available, but book ahead – things get busy in the off-roading season. This place is the adventure mecca of the Ozarks though, and there isn’t a better place to start your adventure. They do have parking available for the week while you ride. We’re working on a agreement with the Oark General Store, but until then you will need to go in the store and ask for Brian who runs the place – he will direct you to where you can park your tow vehicle for the week. The OZ BAT Starts at one of the coolest little general stores in the country. Oark General Store, established in 1890, is a 50’s style gas station that has grown to include a great little grill, and also hosts some rooms for rent and a campground, as well as a parking lot where you can leave your tow rig for the week while you ride. Grab breakfast here, and when the track comes back east, before it heads north – head on back in to Oark for lunch and a fuel fillup. There won’t be much else on the route until you reach Ponca, about 3/4 of the way through the day 1 section.
Day 1 will include some of the most challenging sections of the entire OZ BAT, including 2 Expert sections and an advanced section. It also includes some of the most fun, curviest roads we’ve ever ridden, and the best views. If you only have time for 1 section – it’s a tossup between Section 1 and Section 6.
The Day 1 Section will end in the most interesting town in the Ozarks – Eureka Springs. This old tourist town was once very popular for its therepeutic spring water. Its built on steep hillsides, and full of really great old Victorian architecture. It’s a tourist trap, but a fun one. Stay the night here and enjoy what Eureka Springs has to offer.

Details
Hopefully you’ve enjoyed your stay in Eureka Springs, and Day 2 gets off to a great start. Early-on, you’ll cross the coolest bridge in Arkansas – the Little Golden Gate Bridge. Officially named Beaver Bridge, this picturesque suspension bridge took the place of a ferry operated by Wilson A. Beaver himself, in 1949. Hats off to Arkansas and the local government for such an excellent perservation of an historic transportation portal.
Shortly after the Little Golden Gate, you’ll ride through Roaring River State Park and Fish Hatchery, before riding through the forest service road leading up through the creek. This is a great little section of road – enjoy the ride. The rest of Section 2 is a transition section, to get you from the hills of Arkansas over to the hills of Missouri. It’s great backroads riding, and wil be fairly remote, only passing through a couple small towns. Grab gas and food when you get the chance, because it’s sparse out here.
Day 2’s Track will end at the crossing of the North Fork River. We’ll recommend riding a little further down the trail to find places to camp or lodge for the evening. For some real fun with a group, check out Little Talladega, an AirBnB with a race track, side x sides, game room, and a pool. Fun place to crash for the night along the OZ BAT!
